Yesterday we got news the state received 21,000 applications for the Hoosier Insurance program. However, and what really matters is, only a fraction of those have been approved. According to the Fort Wayne News Sentinel:
While the state took 21,101 applications between mid-December and Wednesday, it has processed only 6,198, Roob said. FSSA is meeting the CMS requirement that applications get processed within 45 days, he said.
Of those processed, FSSA has rejected about a fifth for a variety of reasons, including exceeding income limits or eligibility for employer-sponsored plans, Roob said.
Another 3,392 applications, or more than half of those processed, remain pending approval, and Roob said he expects many of those came from applicants with children, since the state requires more paperwork from them.
Only 295 of the applicants have received full approval, and 1,299 others have conditional approval.
FSSA has hired 46 additional people to staff the health plan, , Roob said. The agency expected to enroll only 50,000 people this year.
At this rate, only about 1,800 will be enrolled by the end of the year. Hope they get those additional people hired soon as there is certainly demand.

Great, I wondered what the deal was. I have called and called. My application was received by them November 19, 2008. As of today March 2, 2009 there is still no answer. What happened to the deadline of 45 days? Have they done away with that? I contacted a lady that I was referred to by the state that oversees the program. She needed alot of information, the answer I got was that it is in the final stages. No kidding! That is what I was told when I called HIP! Is the insurance going to be this much of a nightmare too?

I just read this from the Social Security newsletter. I am so upset. This was my last hope. I need medical attention desperately, but I do not qualify for Medicare for another 2 years or medicaid. I hope and pray that the state can use some of the stimilus recovery money to actually assist people in need. I have worked since I was 15 years old & paid taxes but now there is no help available for me & others. This is so sad — not in the USA!

Well today is April 30th and I just received a letter stating that I was denied for the HIP program. I have been waiting since the first of the year. The 45 days for processing turned into 90 days. The letter said I could not contest or appeal the decision. They were only processing families with children. I understand that children need health insurance as well. However I believe Hoosier Healthwise for children program is available as well. I do not know what I will do now. I have Crohn’s disease, and I need surgery. I guess I wait until I have an emergency and hopefully I won’t die due to lack of medical attention. It’s too bad the government couldn’t take some of the money they send overseas – China – and help the tax paying citizens of the US. I don’t understand how someone could be approved for SS disablilty, but not have insurance available for them.
