Here is a neat idea reported in the Columbia City Post and Mail.
The gist is “Alternative Spring Break (http://unitedway.org/asb) engages young adults in volunteer service. Two years old, it has sent nearly 500 people from every state in the country to regions devastated by the hurricanes of 2005. This year it is expanding into Detroit as well.
The week-long effort attracted 100 young adults in 2006 to help rebuild communities along the Gulf Coast that had been shattered by hurricanes Katrina and Ivan. This year there were nearly 400 people over a period of four weeks helping to rebuild Lake Charles, La., which had been damaged by Hurricane Rita.”
Unfortunately, the participants have to pay many of their own expenses, but it’s a start…and they would have to pay their own expenses to spring break anyway (sans beer) :).
